The Zollelbe is an old or tributary of the Elbe in the city of Magdeburg .

history

The Zollelbe was created in the course of silting up processes of the Elbe in or east of Magdeburg. The course of the river changed repeatedly until the building of bridges and river regulation work in the 18th century increased the accumulation of sand and gravel, so that the island of Großer Werder was formed. Of originally three branches of the river, the Stromelbe, the Middle Elbe and the Old Elbe , the Middle Elbe was the main river. Later, however, this shifted to the Stromelbe, the city-side of the three arms. The Middle Elbe silted up and formed oxbow lakes.

In 1739 the ferry office was commissioned to build a lock between the Stromelbe, which was developing into the new main stream, and the Zollelbe, an oxbow lake , in a pre-existing breakthrough , as ship mills in the main stream and rapids severely restricted traffic. The Magdeburg lock went into operation in 1747 and existed until the second half of the 19th century.

In 1842, a winter protection port , the winter port of Magdeburg , was built on the Zollelbe , which later silted up heavily. Around 1880, after the building ban was lifted in the run-up to the fortress city of Magdeburg, it was expanded into a city harbor. Previously, the shipments were mainly handled on the banks of the Elbe. The advantage of the Zollelbe was its relative proximity to the city center. However, since the site subsequently proved to be too narrow for further major expansion and there was no railway connection , further port facilities were built in the north of the city away from the Zollelbe. Nevertheless, the port continued to be used to a certain extent. The complete destruction of the facilities during the Second World War during the air raid on Magdeburg on January 16, 1945 brought the end of goods handling on the Zollelbe. In addition, it was used again as a winter shelter.

description

To the south, the Zollelbe is connected by a flood ditch with the Taube Elbe oxbow lake , which has a water level-dependent inlet from the Stromelbe, also dependent on the water level. The Zollelbe is known as the Altarm Zollelbe (AZEl) federal waterway . A repair yard exists. Furthermore, the SC Magdeburg with its canoe department has its training facility on the Zollelbe. The listed customs bridge leads over the Zollelbe .
