The Wintersteiger AG , based in Ried im Innkreis is an Upper Austrian companies . Since it was founded in 1953 by Fritz Walter and Johann Wintersteiger, the mechanical engineering company has specialized in niche markets such as ski service, field test technology, wood thin-cutting and wood surface repairs as well as straightening technology.

Company history

Wintersteiger plot combine harvester

In 1954, the young company's first products were a simple seed drill and a laboratory thresher for a seed breeding company. In 1960 the first mass-produced parcel combine was presented.

On behalf of the sporting goods manufacturer Fischer , Wintersteiger manufactured ski production machines for the first time in 1963. These were copy milling machines, gluing stars and finger jointing systems that made the then revolutionary sandwich construction of alpine skis possible. The first stone grinding machine was also built by Wintersteiger and used by Fischer - the then revolutionary micro-plane grinding. In 1966 the company also began manufacturing ski wedge planers, ski presses and gluing stars for ski production. These products have already been sold worldwide. In 1970 a wood thin-cutting saw - the so-called "thin-cutting gate" - was developed for the manufacture of ski wedges, and in 1978 the manufacture of ski production machines was given up in favor of ski service machines.

In 1983, a patented precision planter was presented in the field of agricultural machinery.

Further milestones

The breakthrough to the world market leader in ski service came in 1985 with the first stone grinding machines of the Micro series. The Engineering Division was founded in 1991 and the thin-cutting frame was made fit for high-quality thin-cutting wood.

Wintersteiger has been the exclusive machine supplier to the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) since 1998 . With the purchase of the company Hege, Germany, Wintersteiger expanded the product range in the field of seed breeding research in 1999. In 2004, with the purchase of the company Banholzer GmbH, Germany, investments were made in the production of saw blades and in 2006 a new saw production plant was built in Arnstadt , Thuringia.

In the same year, Wintersteiger built two more buildings: a sales and service branch in Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac , France and in Salt Lake City , USA. In 2011 Wintersteiger took over the majority of Kohler Maschinenbau GmbH and thus created a fourth pillar of the company: straightening technology. In the same year, Wintersteiger bought Bootdoc as a supplement to the Sports division and in 2012 took over the majority of VAP Automation GmbH.

Group structure

The company is divided into five business areas:

  • In the Sports division , total solutions for the rental and service of skis and snowboards ( ski service ) are developed and sold; Wintersteiger is the exclusive outfitter of the ÖSV .
  • The Seedmech business area develops complete solutions for agricultural field trials, specializing in seed cultivation .
  • The Woodtech business area stands for precise thin wood cutting . These include thin- cutting band saws , thin- cutting frame saws , TRC "Timber Repair Cosmetic" systems for wood surface repairs as well as systems and automation solutions for industrial production companies.
  • The Metals division produces straightening machines for the sheet metal processing industry (Kohler Maschinenbau).
