The Winthrop Glacier is a large glacier on the northeast side of Mount Rainier in Washington state . Named after Theodore Winthrop , the ice cap covers about 9.1 km² and has a volume of 523 million cubic meters. Starting at over 14,300 ft (approximately 4,360 m) on Columbia Crest, the glacier stretches northward and flows steeply down the valley over the uneven terrain at Mount Rainier. Another glacier, the Emmons Glacier , is directly connected to it up to the Steamboat Prow. After passing the Prow, the glaciers separate; the Emmons turns east-northeast and the Winthrop continues its way to the northeast. As soon as the terrain becomes level, the Winthrop glacier is heavily covered by rubble; it ends in a forest at around 4,900 ft (1,490 m) altitude. The meltwater from the glacier feeds the White River .

Debris flows

The glacier is one of four on Mount Rainier that is responsible for the debris flows it releases. The Nisqually , Kautz and South Tahoma glaciers produce similar currents .
