The Reichenau winegrowers 'association is the smallest independent winegrowers' cooperative in the Baden wine-growing region and produces wine from Germany's southernmost wine-growing region . It is a registered cooperative. The vineyards on the island of Reichenau are cultivated by the Vines Building and Winery Cooperative Insel Reichenau eG. The winery is located in part of the former Reichenau monastery , the south wing of the town hall, in Mittelzell.

history

The first vine was planted in 818 under Abbot Hatto I. The Reichenau winegrowers' association was founded in 1896 with the help of Pastor Meinrad Meier. Most of the vines froze to death in the winter of 1928/29. The number of members and vineyards developed as follows:

  • 1896 62 vine workers
  • 1913 194 members with 140 hectares of vineyards
  • 2018 22 hectares of vineyards, including 1 hectare organic

Around 11 hectares of the vineyard area are allocated to the vine-building and wine-growing cooperative, and another 11 hectares to around 50 part-time winemakers.

The vine building and winegrowing cooperative was founded in January 1975. After the land consolidation at the end of the 1960s, the slopes, unpopular with vegetable gardeners, were used for planting vines. The vines and winegrowing cooperative have leased 9.5 hectares, 1.5 hectares belong to them. (As of 2019).

Cultivated grape varieties

Are grown Müller-Thurgau (about 40%), Pinot Noir (35%), Gutedel (10%), gray Noir (10%), Kerner, Muscat, Chardonnay.

Vineyards

Around 10 hectares of the cultivation area are located around the Hochwart viewpoint. There is also an educational wine trail there. Due to the land consolidation in the 1970s, the slopes were reserved for viticulture and the flat areas for growing vegetables.

marketing

Since April 2019, the sales rooms have been in the basement of the west wing of the town hall in the passage from the cathedral to the cloister courtyard. Around 50 to 60% of the approx. 200,000 bottles (as of 2018) are marketed directly on site. The rest goes to the catering and retail trade on the island and the region.
