Wir Drei is one of the most famous paintings by the German painter Philipp Otto Runge ; it was formerly in the Kunsthalle Hamburg , but was burned in 1931 in the fire of the glass palace in Munich . One drawing by Runge (dated February 7, 1805) is all that remains.

description

The picture intended for the artist's parents was completed in autumn 1805. The artist stands in a blue-black skirt on the right edge of the picture and looks at the viewer with his head tilted slightly forward. His wife Pauline stands by his side in a golden yellow dress. She has put her arm around the painter's shoulder and tilts her head towards him. Daniel Runge , the painter's brother, is standing on the left edge of the picture, leaning against an oak tree. He left his right hand tucked under his skirt in front of his chest. Pauline has taken his left hand, which is hanging casually.

comment

The plant in the lower right corner seems to be Ruprecht's herb , popularly known as “God's grace”. The painter saw himself carried by the grace of God. The painter sees his brother Daniel as a strong oak that spreads its leaves protectively over the artist and his wife. Runge had written to his brother at the end of 1802: "I have always relied on you for the very highest that is in me, and to thank you for it". At that time, Runge had advertised Pauline. Now it was she who made the connection between the brothers. The ivy that climbs up on the oak is said to symbolize the eternity of this connection.

The painter Julius von Ehren repainted the oil painting based on Runge's example. This painting is owned by the Hamburger Kunsthalle today .
