Certified business specialist is a publicly recognized degree at master's level , which is awarded after successfully completing commercial advancement training in accordance with the Vocational Training Act. The nationwide examination takes place on the basis of a special statutory ordinance before the examination board of a Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

Training content

The legal basis of the training is the ordinance issued by the Ministry of Education on the examination for the recognized qualification of certified business specialist (WFachwPrV), which replaced the previously valid regulations for business specialist (IHK) on September 1, 2008. According to this nationwide regulation, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) created a framework plan with learning objectives.

Training duration

The DIHK framework plan recommends a course of 650 hours for advanced training to become a business administrator. Public and private educational institutions offer courses on the exams between six and 24 months, both full-time and part-time or via distance learning; However, participation in a course is not compulsory for admission to the examination.

For people without an initial commercial training, some course providers also offer bridging courses that include basic knowledge in financial accounting and a refresher in commercial arithmetic and other things.

Exam admission requirements

Examination and completion

The exam is divided into a business-related part in the form of a written exam (a partial exam each in economics / business administration, accounting, law & taxes and corporate governance) and an action-specific part in the form of a written exam (based on a situation task) and, if this is passed, a presentation followed by a technical discussion. The written examinations all take place nationwide at the same time on the same day.

After successfully passing the exam, the examining Chamber of Commerce and Industry awards the publicly recognized qualification as Certified Business Administrator .

Many universities, especially universities of applied sciences, offer the possibility of crediting the certified business economist to business studies.

The passed exam to become a specialist is an admission requirement for the certified business economist (IHK) , as well as for the certified business economist (Hwo)

Financial funding opportunities

Participants in advanced training courses can apply for benefits via the Advancement Training Assistance Act (“Meister-BAföG”) to fund the course and examination fees .

Depending on the individual case, funding from the Employment Agency or the responsible job center is also possible via a so-called education voucher. The basic requirement for this is a corresponding certification by the educational institution.
