Wiser.org (formerly WiserEarth.org) was a user-generated online community of the social and environmental movement that tracked the work of nonprofits around the globe.

overview

The site recorded and networked NGOs (English non-governmental organizations, NGOs), businesses, governments, groups and individuals that deal with global challenges such as climate change , poverty , ecology , peace , water , world hunger , social justice , environmental protection , human rights and. a. busy. The term WISER is an acronym and stands for World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility ("World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility"). The website Wiser.org was operated by the non-profit organization WiserEarth.

history

Wiser.org was founded on Earth Day (April 22nd) 2007 as an online directory of the more than 100,000 organizations mentioned in Paul Hawken's book, Blessed Unrest. Hawken had amassed countless business cards from thousands of organizations over the years, but could not find a comprehensive directory of all nonprofits involved in social justice and environmental issues. He himself estimated the total number of such organizations to be well over a million, and then founded Wiser.org as an online directory to record the work of these organizations. Later on, Wiser.org also offered the functionalities of a social network such as B. Groups and a function to send messages. This created more opportunities for mutual cooperation. Although the API and media content were licensed for non-commercial use (see below), Wiser.org expanded its online directory to include for-profit companies and government agencies.

The wiser.org directory was officially closed on April 22, 2014, seven years after its creation.

facts and figures

As of January 26, 2012, the directory included more than 113,000 organizations worldwide, more than 64,000 registered members, and more than 2,800 groups. The content was divided into 47 subject areas and 381 sub-areas. Wiser.org was provided in English, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Wiser.org directory

The Wiser.org directory referred to a master list of subject areas that were "networked" in a certain way: Registered members could edit the "link" of each subject to organizations, resources, vacancies, events and groups. The site offered groupware, functionalities of a social network and a visualized representation of the network. The opportunity to propose "solutions" was unique. This allowed each registered member to formulate a specific social or ecological problem and to submit a corresponding solution. This could then be shared with others, modified and put into practice. Each solution was given a publication and a network page as well as an associated discussion forum. Wiser.org also offered embedded Google Maps with the associated geographic data. Wiser.org was not for profit and was free to use. The content was made available under the " Creative Commons 3.0" license.

Wiser.org programming interface

From June 2009 Wiser.org offered a RESTful - Programming , develops under the "Creative Commons 3.0" license. The Wiser.org programming interface provided access to the extensive database of records such as B. Organizations, groups, vacancies, events, resources and solutions. Attached to this was a list of frequently asked questions and a documentation page from the developers.
