The Natural Science University of Tokyo ( Japanese 東京 理科 大学 , Tōkyō rika daigaku , English Tokyo University of Science , short: Rikadai ( 理科 大 ) or Ridai ( 理 大 )) is a private university in Japan . The main campus is in Kagurazaka, Shinjuku-ku in Tokyo .
history
The university was founded in 1881 by the 21 graduates of the Imperial University under the name Tokyo Physics Academy ( 東京 物理学 講習 所 , Tōkyō butsuri-gaku kōshūjo ). They founded the academy to spread science in Japan; in the past there was only one scientific educational institution in the state - its alma mater . In 1883, the academy was renamed Tokyo Physics School ( 東京 物理 学校 , Tōkyō butsuri gakkō ), and in 1906 it moved to today's Kagurazaka campus. In 1917 it was recognized as a technical school.
In 1949 it developed into the Tokyo University of Natural Sciences with a faculty (natural sciences; day courses and evening courses). She added faculties: Pharmacy (1960), Engineering (1962), Natural and Engineering Sciences (1967), Industrial Natural and Engineering Sciences (1987; Japanese 基礎 工 学部 , English Faculty of Industrial Science and Technology ), and Business Administration (1993 ).
The university's educational body now has two other universities, one in San'yō-Onoda in Yamaguchi Prefecture ( 山口 東京 理科 大学 , Yamaguchi Tōkyō rika daigaku , founded in 1987) and one in Chino in Nagano Prefecture ( 諏 訪 東京 理科 大学 , Suwa Tōkyō rika daigaku , founded in 1990).
