Witberger is a white wine variety . It is a cross between Trollinger (Schiava grossa) and Riesling , which Heinrich Birk carried out at the Geisenheim research institute in Rheingau in 1928. The fast-growing vine turned out to be susceptible to mold, such as gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ). The breeding results were overall unsatisfactory. The poor body wine was too acidic . They tried to use it in the production of sparkling wine , which did not pay off. The vine was then withdrawn after the trial stage and was not used for commercial cultivation.
