Witold Pronobis (born January 27, 1947 ) is a Polish historian, publicist and journalist.

Life

Witold Pronobis studied history at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń , and in 1970 he became a research assistant there. In 1976 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Polish areas annexed to East Prussia in 1939 ("Rejencja Ciechanowska", German administrative region Zichenau ). In the early 1980s he went to the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1983 he became editor of the Polish program of Radio Free Europe in Munich. There he built up the largest foreign collection of Polish underground press.

He is the author of numerous historical documentaries, including a. about the Katyn massacre or the call by the Polish bishops to their German colleagues for reconciliation of November 1965. He worked with the Paris-based Zeszyty Historyczne (“Historical Books”) and other Polish publishers in exile ( Widnokrąg, Libertas, Puls ). He was also in contact with underground publishers in Poland. He is the author of a textbook on the history of Poland and the world in the 20th century, which was used in most Polish schools in the first few years after the political change of 1989. From 1999 to 2009 he ran a meeting place for cross-border dialogue in the western Polish village of Marwice near Gorzów Wielkopolski .
