Wladimir Iossifowitsch Petwiashvili , ( Russian Владимир Иосифович Петвиашвили , English transcription Vladimir Iosifovich Petviashvili ; born September 12, 1936 , † July 21, 1993 ) was a Russian plasma physicist, known for contributions to the theory of solitons .

He was at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology .

In 1970 he carried out the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation , later named after them, with Boris Borissowitsch Kadomzew , which acquired a similar meaning in two dimensions as the Korteweg-de-Vries equation in one dimension in soliton theory . In 1992 he received the Tamm Prize .
