Wladimiro Bas Zabache

Wladimiro also Vladimiro "Vlady" Bas Zabache (born February 2, 1929 in Bilbao ) is a Basque - Spanish jazz musician ( alto saxophone , clarinet , flute ), composer and band leader.

Zabache first learned piano, violoncello and harmony at the Conservatory of Bilbao, later he had lessons in saxophone and clarinet with his father, a concert musician. In 1948 she made her first appearances in local clubs and on local radio stations. From 1952 he lived mainly in Madrid ; During this period he went on tour to the United States, where he represented his home country at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958 in the International Youth Jazz Band directed by Marshall Brown , and toured Switzerland and Portugal. In 1968 he founded the formation Los mejores del jazz and was one of the pioneers of free jazz in Spain. He put on some albums like Viva Europa or Free jazz en la Universidad .

Later he worked as a music teacher in Madrid, played with his own quartet and with the trio of his daughter Paula Bas. In 1986 he played in the Dusko Goykovich Big Band in San Sebastian , and also worked with Monty Alexander , Lee Konitz , Slide Hampton , Pony Poindexter , Johnny Griffin , Tete Montoliu and Juan Carlos Calderon .
