The week of winter readiness and fire protection (often referred to as winter readiness week ) was the official name for measures carried out across the country in the GDR , which dealt with preparations for the approaching winter and fire prevention . The " Winter Readiness and Fire Protection Week " first took place in October 1964 and was held annually in autumn until 1990 (there was already a winter readiness day in the 1950s ). Measures included:

  • Caretakers , businesses and landlords had to check whether litter had been stored and whether their snow shovels and other clearing equipment were still available and in order.
  • Ensuring sufficient feed stocks on farms .
  • Filling up additional coal heaps for the increased energy demand during the winter months.
  • Stocking of medicines in pharmacies and clinics.
  • Controls on compliance with preventive fire protection measures in all companies, schools and kindergartens, in commercial facilities and in homes.
  • Broad general public relations work on fire protection behavior.
