Sides (full name: Société Industrielle pour le Développement de la Securité ) is a French manufacturer of fire fighting equipment based in Saint-Nazaire in the Loire-Atlantique department . In 2017 the company was one of the two market leaders for fire fighting vehicles in France.

history

Sides was founded in 1951 as a manufacturer of extinguishing agents . In 1956 the first fire engines for airports and industrial sites were manufactured. In the decades that followed, Sides developed numerous types of fire engines for airports, plant fire departments and the public sector, some of which became the basis for public standards for fire engines in France.

In the 2010s, Sides, like other French fire engine manufacturers, ran into difficulties due to increasing international competition. The number of vehicles ordered has halved within 10 years. There were also outstanding receivables due to customer arrears. The number of employees decreased from 240 in 2012 to 190 in 2017.

After several changes of ownership, the company was sold in 2013 by the American United Technologies Corporation to the German holding company Bavaria Industries Group . Sides in May 2017 sought to avoid a bankruptcy creditor protection ( procédure de sauvegarde , d. H. Protection against its creditors). In July 2017, Bavaria Industries sold Sides to the Breton Armoric Holding . Armoric, which was founded in 2008 and specializes in the field of special vehicles, in particular armored police cars, had already been traded as the only prospective buyer and likely buyer some time before. Since the takeover by Armoric, Sides has also focused on the development of products in the armaments and security sector. Among other things, it has already sold water cannons to Hong Kong .

In January 2019, the company received a major order from the French army for 50 fire engines for use abroad for delivery within the next 3 years. Sides was also able to prevail against the competition in a tender for vehicles to fight forest fires in Corsica.
