The Wockersee is a lake in the district town of Parchim in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

description

The body of water lies in the northeast of the city and while around two thirds of the west bank and the south bank are built up, the Wockersee is surrounded by forests and meadows in the north and east, and wet meadows in the north. The Wocker, which comes further north from the Granziner peat bog, flows into the lake on the north bank. The drainage of the water happens via the Wocker (papermaker's trench), which flows into a branch of the Elde .

The approximately 1500 meters long, 600 meters wide and 60 hectares large Wockersee has a water volume of 2.26 million m³. The water level is 44.1  m above sea level. NHN . The mean depth is 3.8 meters. The body of water has the deepest point at 6.4 meters in its eastern central area. The catchment area has a size of 33.3 km². Because of its shallow water, the Wockersee is classified as polymictic . Investigations by the State Office for the Environment and Nature (StAUN) in Schwerin found a high level of nutrient pollution in 1997, and the depth of vision improved from 0.8 to 1.0 meters between 1997 and 2001.

In the past, the lake was heavily used for fishing and recreation. Today it is primarily used for local recreation. There are several bathing options, such as at the bathing establishment on the west bank, which also offers boat rental, sailing, surfing and fishing.

Trivia

As an unofficial and popular name for the city of Parchim, “Pütt” has been mentioned for the first time in literature since the 1920s and is now widely used in the region. "Pütt bi Parchen" was often used by non-resident Mecklenburgers when the city was mentioned. The Low German word for “puddle” probably alluded to the size of the Parchimer Wockersee, but is now associated with the city.
