Vodka filter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term vodka filter stands for a filter for nitrates that is used in freshwater and saltwater aquariums .

Rotting processes and excretions trigger a nitrogen cycle and nitrification in the aquarium , which can lead to the accumulation of nitrate ions by bacteria of the Nitrobacter genus . These nitrate ions can lead to growth disorders and increased algae formation and must therefore be removed when the aquarium is maintained.

The name results from the use of vodka as an inexpensive and less toxic source of carbon in such nitrate filters . The alcohol creates a type of bacteria that reduces the nitrate content of the water.
