The building, which was considered to be the most splendid house on the street, was built between 1901 and 1903 according to plans by Leipzig architect Robert Röthig for Margarethe von Hugo instead of older buildings in what was then Weststraße as a double dwelling. The richly decorated facade was reminiscent of a wide variety of styles, including portrait reliefs , masks, putti , gaff heads , cartouches and neo-Renaissance columns .

The house was inhabited until the 1990s. Since the exuberance of the facade design represented a special feature in the Leipzig cityscape, citizens and especially the city administration had campaigned for the preservation of the monument. But even promised subsidies could not persuade the homeowners to renovate. The house was falling into disrepair and the owners applied for demolition. The roof of the house was almost completely destroyed by fire on October 19, 2005. Since attempts by the city to obtain the house through buyers or sponsors failed, the owners' request for demolition was granted by the city of Leipzig and the house was demolished on April 4, 2006. A photo documentation of the city shows the architectural design for posterity.
