The Ludwig Kraus residential and commercial building at Klosterstrasse 70 and 70a / Oststrasse 60 in the center of Düsseldorf was built in 1889 for Ludwig Kraus according to plans by the architect Peter Paul Fuchs and, according to the Düsseldorf architects and engineers association, was characterized by its "picturesque" facades with " Forms of the early German Renaissance and Gothic individual forms ” . A new building is located on the site of the house that was destroyed in the great Pentecostal attack on June 12, 1943 .

Location and surroundings

In the middle of the 19th century, Oststraße was still the easternmost street in downtown Düsseldorf. Its original name was Petersstraße , but with increasing development it was given the name Oststraße . From the 1930s, one section was called Karl-Rudolf-Straße and the other section was called Straße der SA . This section got its old name back in 1945. Today, the street is considered "as one of the major north-south connecting streets, an address primarily for shops, offices and administrations." In Oststrasse there are various sacred buildings, such as the monastery church of St. Antonius of the Franciscan Order at the intersection of Oststrasse and Immermannstrasse and the The neo-Gothic church of St. Mary's Conception dominates the street .

history

The corner building at Klosterstrasse 70 and 70a / Oststrasse 60 was built in 1889 for Ludwig Kraus (as the owner), so it was not yet completed in 1889 and therefore uninhabited. The construction costs totaled 90,000 marks, 22.5 marks per cubic meter of enclosed space. Ludwig Kraus is also documented as the owner for the years 1891, 1892, 1897 and 1899. In 1895 the hostel Gasthaus zur Heimath (Evangel.) Was located at Oststrasse 60 .

architecture

The Düsseldorf Architects and Engineers Association praised the facade design - “The forms of the German early renaissance were used for the picturesque front sides ; the gothic individual forms should bring about harmony with the nearby church buildings that dominate the street scene ” - as well as the floor plan of the house, which was built according to a design by the architect Peter Paul Fuchs and had a striking corner tower. The building belonged to a group of commercial buildings selected by the Düsseldorf Architects and Engineers' Association, "which are of particular interest in terms of floor plan development or frontal formation, as well as those that appear to be important for the development of the commercial building in Düsseldorf."
