history

After the First World War , rental apartments were mainly built in Lehe by non-profit building associations and cooperatives. The non-profit Spar- und Bauverein Lehe (today Housing Cooperative Bremerhaven eG. ) Was founded in 1906, but built its larger residential complexes after 1918 with the contributions of its members and state funding through interest reductions.
This residential complex was built between 1927 and 1930 according to plans by Ernst Cappelmann. The construction area was on the north / western edge of the Lehe district, in the city of Wesermünde , which had existed since 1924 . The four-storey perimeter block development with one or two staggered storeys, with flat roofs and various passageways consisted of 122 apartments (mostly with 2 and 3 rooms) and was one of the largest housing projects in Lehe at the time. The ornamental street facades in the style of brick expressionism are characterized by the red-colored clinker bricks and the bay windows with the triangular pointed protrusions, particularly striking on the building corners. The central projection at the entrance on Potsdamer Strasse with the year 1930 in the gable triangle is striking. The courtyard facades are plastered.

The single-storey wash house in the courtyard was built in 1929. The five-storey plastered building Batteriestraße 51/53 with 20 apartments was not built until 1967 according to plans by Fr. Fries, after two gabled houses were demolished there. Garages were later built in the inner courtyard.

In 1909, the architect Cappelmann also planned the listed residential building at Hafenstrasse 199 , but still in the traditional neo -baroque style .
In a similar style, the housing group Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße 173 in the Mitte district and the Werkblock residential complex in the Twischkamp district of Leh were built in the vicinity from 1927 to 1931 .
