The residential water tower in Preetz , built in 1929, is one of the few high-rise buildings in Germany that also served as a water tower . The tower stands on Kleine Hufe street and, with its almost 26 m height, protrudes only a little over the houses of the city.

Building

It is a cubic brick building with a square floor plan. Rows of dark clinker bricks structure the masonry, which is otherwise made of lighter stones. The tower shows construction forms of North German brick expressionism , such as pilaster strips placed over a corner and a pointed staircase.

Each of the six lower floors originally housed an apartment with a floor area of 64 m². This area is clearly structured vertically due to the color change of the bricks. There are four fields on each side, the windows of the apartments are in the middle.

The container floor with vertical decorative stripes, a few narrow window openings and a flat roof is located above the living area - slightly indented. Inside there is a cylindrical water tank with a capacity of 150 m³ riveted together from steel plates.

Development of the Preetzer water supply

Preetz received a central water supply relatively late . For a long time the rich private wells and the clean water of the Schwentine were sufficient for the needs of the place. In the late 1920s, the water level began to be lowered to contain flooding. This also sank the groundwater level and many wells dried up.

In 1927, the majority of the citizens of Preetz decided to build a waterworks and a water pipe . A water tower was initially thought to be unnecessary, but was then included in the planning. There was disagreement about the shape of the tower. Finally, the expressionist design by the town planning director Giesenhagen was implemented. The model for the building was the much larger Wulsdorf residential water tower in Bremerhaven, then Wesermünde.

The Preetz waterworks was laid out so generously that extensions were only necessary after the Second World War. Since 1974 the Preetz water supply has been provided by the Stadtwerke Kiel.

Further use of the building

After youth groups had already used the two lower floors of the tower in 1954, the entire tower was converted into a youth home in 1964, with an extension to the building. Today a youth center uses the lower two floors and the extension. The floors above are used by associations. On the top floor there is a radio amateur operating room of the DARC eV plus 3 antennas on the roof. The water tank is still there and accessible from the outside.
