Water tower

The Wulsdorf residential water tower in Bremerhaven-Wulsdorf was built in 1927 and served as both a water tower and a residential building. The 33 meter high reinforced concrete structure was the first skyscraper on the Unterweser at the time of construction and has been a listed building since 1978 . Along with the water towers in Bremerhaven-Lehe ( water tower Bremerhaven-Lehe (Hafenstrasse) , water tower Bremerhaven-Lehe (Langener Landstrasse) ) and the water tower Geestemünde, it is the fourth preserved water tower in Bremerhaven.

Building history

In the 1920s the fishing port was expanded considerably. The rare combination of residential building and water tower is explained by the need to meet the rapidly increasing demand for water in the fishing port and at the same time to alleviate the housing shortage in the then city of Wesermünde .

The construction was planned by the Wesermünder Stadtbaurat Wilhelm Kunz (1880–1945) in cooperation with Bremerhaven's building construction department manager Heinrich Mangel. The construction time was 15 months, the construction costs were 420,000  Reichsmarks .

Since it was a reinforced concrete skeleton structure , the inner walls could be moved or removed freely. This could also have created larger offices. In view of the housing shortage, however, it was decided to only furnish apartments.

Building

It is an eight-storey reinforced concrete frame building with clinker facing . It contains 24 two- and three-room apartments on five floors. The residential floors are structured by triangular pilaster strips and pillar-like corners. The drip tray area with small diamond-shaped windows connects to the top. The barely structured container storey completes the building at the top. Under the cornice it has a serrated band with diamond-shaped windows. In the middle of the building, a triangular stairwell bay connects the living area with the tank floor, where two elevated tanks made of reinforced concrete originally held 1500 m³ of water.

In terms of architectural history, the residential water tower can be assigned to both North German brick expressionism and the functional style of New Building . It was one of the first buildings in Wesermünde to take up the modern architectural trends of the 1920s.

More residential water towers

The Blumenthal water tower houses a day-care center on the ground floor. The Preetz residential water tower is in Preetz (Schleswig-Holstein) .
