history

In the 19th century, the water supply was a major problem for the rapidly growing communities on the Lower Weser , since in the places near the coast mostly only unsuitable groundwater ( brackish water ) was found for drinking water . From 1863 there was a water pipe in the place. The water supply for Geestemünde was provided by the Bexhövede waterworks . The waterworks on Wulsdorfer Chaussee had been in operation since 1883. The first water tower was built in Geestendorf in 1885.

The water tower was built in 1891 in the historicist era when the water supply was expanded on what was then Neuer Markt at the highest point in the area as a round brick building with a cantilevered tower head and a conical roof . The tower of Geestemünde was of a type that was designed by Professor Dr. Ing. Otto Intze from the Technical University of Aachen came from. Its daily output was 500 m³. A striking cornice and the four gable dormers characterize the tower as a landmark of the district.

Previously, the Bremerhaven-Lehe water tower (Hafenstrasse) for Alt-Bremerhaven had already been built in Lehe in 1853 , as groundwater suitable for drinking water was found here. The second Bremerhaven-Lehe water tower (Langener Landstrasse) was also built by 1886, a few years earlier. The fourth water tower in Bremerhaven is the striking, expressionist Wulsdorf residential water tower from 1927.

The tower in Geestemünde was badly damaged during World War II . The original roof dome had to be replaced by a flat roof. In 1976 the tower was threatened with demolition. It was then renovated until 1978 and its historical condition was restored. From 1996 the tower was no longer required for the water supply. In 2003 it received a gastronomic extension.
Today (2018) the water supply of Bremerhaven is provided by swb AG .
