Wolf-Dietrich Brettschneider (born July 15, 1943 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German sports scientist .

Life

Brettschneider worked as a sports scientist at the German Sport University Cologne and at the University of Hamburg before moving to the University of Paderborn in 1972 , where he taught until 1991. In 1975 he had submitted his doctoral thesis on the didactics of physical education. From 1991 to 1997 he worked at the Free University of Berlin and returned to Paderborn in 1997, where he was in charge of the sports and education department in the Sport and Health Department until he retired in 2008. Following his professional activity at the University of Paderborn, he acted as the founding director of an institute for sports science in Doha , Qatar .

An important topic of his scientific work was the life-world youth research. He dealt with competitive youth sport and the double burden of school and sport. In particular, a cross-sectional study to research the everyday stresses of young high-performance athletes and, in this context, the book “Becoming World Champion and Creating School”, published jointly with Alfred Richartz , was given great importance. The motto used as the book title “Become world champion and go to school” has become a catchphrase and is taken up as a motto by sports schools, among others.

Other focal points of his research were youth work in sports clubs and school sports.

Brettschneider was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor of the German Association for Sports Science (DVS) for his work . The textbook series “Studieren Sportwissenschaft” published by him was classified by the DVS as “one of the most successful series within sports science”. In 2010 he was honored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with the President's Prize, which recognizes groups and individuals for outstanding scientific contributions to physical education and physical education. In 2012 he was recognized by the Paderborn City Sports Association as a “deserved personality” of Paderborn sports.

In the early 1990s he held the post of spokesman for the sports education section at the German Association for Sports Science for two years, and at the German Research Foundation he worked for a long time as an expert in sports education. At the German Sports Association or its successor organization, the German Olympic Sports Association , he was chairman of the education commission.
