The volcano Wolf ( Spanish: Volcán Wolf ) is at 1707 m the highest point on the island of Isabela and the highest mountain in the Galápagos Islands as a whole. The volcano is named after the German geologist and botanist Theodor Wolf , who scientifically researched the Galápagos Islands at the end of the 19th century.
Wolf is the northernmost of six volcanoes that make up Isabela Island. The shield volcano is dominated by a steep-walled caldera with a diameter of 6 to 7 kilometers and a maximum depth of 700 meters. Within the Galápagos Islands, only the Cerro Azul in the south of Isabela has a similarly deep caldera with 650 m. Wolf is an active volcano, the first recorded eruption of which occurred in 1797 and a penultimate one in 1982. It currently erupted again on May 25, 2015 and lava flows over the southeastern slope.
The next village Puerto Villamil with 2200 inhabitants is 115 km south of the crater.
