Wolfgang Köhler (biostatistician)

Wolfgang Köhler (born July 16, 1941 in Netphen ; † February 21, 2017 ) was a German mathematician and biostatistician.

Life

Wolfgang Köhler studied mathematics and physics at the Universities of Marburg and Berlin, and later also biology and genetics. After graduating as a mathematician in 1968, he worked as a scientist at the Free University of Berlin , received his doctorate in 1973 and completed his habilitation in 1977 in the subjects of biometrics and genetics. In 1980 Köhler was appointed to the professorship for biometrics and population genetics at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and held this position until he retired at the end of September 2006.

Wolfgang Köhler researched questions of biostatistics and bioinformatics with work on modeling and simulation, whereby the focus was always on application orientation. Based on the methods of statistics, he developed environmental informatics. His research gave important scientific impulses in the areas of genome analysis and the biodiversity of agricultural landscapes. He advocated the use of new information technologies in research and teaching - also several times as dean of the department.

Honors

The Agricultural and Veterinary University of Iași , Romania, awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1999 for his special achievements as a partnership officer and for his commitment to promoting joint projects in research and teaching.
