Wolfgang Krieger (born June 3, 1940 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) is a German mathematician who deals with analysis.

Since 1959, Krieger studied mathematics and physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he did his doctorate in 1968 with Elmar Thoma (About measurement classes) . 1962 to 1965 he studied at Harvard University with a master’s degree in 1964. He was a research assistant in Munich from 1966 to 1968 and assistant professor from 1968, from 1970 associate professor and from 1972 professor at Ohio State University . In 1973/74 he was visiting professor at the University of Göttingen. From 1974 until his retirement in 2006 he was a professor at Heidelberg University . From 1985 to 1987 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics.

He deals with ergodic theory and dynamic systems and operator algebras (Cuntz-Krieger algebras are named after him and Joachim Cuntz ).

In 1977/78 he was visiting scholar at IHES and the University of Paris VI, 1982/83 at the University of Ottawa, 1988/89 at the Almaden Research Center of IBM and in 2005/06 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1997 he was a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (On Generators in Ergodic Theory) .
