Wolfgang Niess (born August 18, 1952 in Giengen an der Brenz ) is a German historian , author and moderator . He studied history, political science, mathematics and communication science at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Tübingen . Niess is the author of numerous radio and television programs, essays and book publications on aspects of contemporary history.

He has been dealing with the revolution of 1918/1919 since the 1970s ; He dealt with their interpretations in German historiography over the past 100 years in his dissertation.

Wolfgang Niess moderated radio programs on the SWR and SDR and developed the series of events "Author in conversation", which he has moderated since 1994. Well-known German-speaking writers were his guests here, as well as historians such as Ian Kershaw , Christopher Clark and Joachim Fest . From 1979 to 2018, Wolfgang Niess worked as an editor, presenter and author for SDR and SWR, most recently as editor- in- chief at SWR television.

He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Weimar Republic Association for the House of the Weimar Republic .
