House of the Weimar Republic

The House of the Weimar Republic in Weimar is a museum opened in July 2019 on Theaterplatz in Weimar, commemorating the adoption of the Weimar Constitution .

history

The classicist carriage house built at the beginning of the 19th century based on designs by the master builder Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray was largely destroyed in the Second World War

On July 31, 2019 - 100 years after the Weimar Constitution was passed - the House of the Weimar Republic was opened here. The central memorial to the first German democracy was built directly opposite the German National Theater , where the members of the National Assembly met in 1919 . The Weimar Republic Association V. reminds with the museum of an important piece of German history. The house is intended to serve as a meeting place, exchange and discussion. Since it was founded in 2013, the association has pursued the goal of making the Weimar Republic a more central theme in its hometown. Construction began in November 2018. As the owner of the building, the city of Weimar received federal funding from the “National Urban Development Projects” program for the construction project. Around 3.9 million euros, including 3 million euros from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs and around 600,000 euros from urban development funds, were invested in the project. The association took on the interior work and will maintain the house.

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition shows an overall picture of the Weimar Republic. In six chapters time is made tangible through exhibits, pictures and films. In addition to media stations and interactive games, there are time capsules in which film recordings are brought back to life through dubbing. The exhibition was curated and realized by the exhibition agency musealis. A visitor center was opened on July 31, 2019 to accompany the permanent exhibition. It consists of a foyer, a café with a shop and a cinema room in which an introductory film is shown that gives an overview of the Weimar Republic. More than 10,000 visitors were registered by mid-September 2019.
