Wolfgang Proß

Wolfgang Proß (* 1945 ) is a German Germanist and professor emeritus for modern German literature and general and comparative literature at the University of Bern .

Professional background

With his dissertation Jean Paul's historical position , Proß received his doctorate in 1974. phil., followed by his habilitation on Johann Gottfried Herder in 1985 with the title ›Nature‹ and ›Ethos‹ in the work of JG Herder . Proß taught and researched for decades at the University of Bern, most recently at the Chair of Modern German Literature and General and Comparative Literature . In 1988 he became director of the German Institute. From 1997 to 1999 Proß was Vice Dean of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Bern and then its Dean until 2001 .

In addition to Paul and Herder and Christoph Martin Wieland , his main research interests include Arno Schmidt , the European theater in the 18th century and others.

Wolfgang Proß is a founding member of the Society for University and Scientific History (GUW). In 2016 Proß was awarded the Herder Medal of the International Herder Society.

In addition to his academic work in the university business as well as his philological research and publications, Proß is also active as an author and other contributor on topics of music and visual arts.
