Wolfgang Reisewitz (born September 9, 1917 in Diedenhofen , Alsace-Lorraine , † February 8, 2012 in Wiesbaden ) was a German photographer of the post-war period.

Life

Reisewitz was born in Thionville in 1917, the son of a photographer. When he was released from Soviet captivity in 1947, he followed in his father's footsteps and became a photographer. After attending the Bavarian State College for Photography in 1948/49, which he completed with the master's examination, Reisewitz was a master student with Adolf Lazi in Stuttgart. When he was supposed to organize an exhibition in 1949, there was a dispute with the conservative jury. Reisewitz then founded the fotoform group with like-minded people , whose exhibitions in Germany and Europe led to a renewal of German post-war photography . In 1951 he took part in the exhibition Subjective Photography in Saarbrücken put together by Otto Steinert . The term “New Seeing” was coined together. Reisewitz turned more and more to abstract photography and won numerous international awards and prizes. In 1999 he was awarded the Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography .

In 1962 Reisewitz was given a teaching position at the Mainz Werkkunstschule, which later became the Mainz University of Applied Sciences . There he became professor for design photography. He died in Wiesbaden in 2012.
