description

The pit, view from the north

The pit is about 3 meters in diameter, 3 meters deep and was built in 1637. It was painstakingly carved into the sandstone by hand and is probably the best preserved in all of Franconia . During the “ Little Ice Age ” around 1600 the wolf population was large, and farmers dug wolf pits to protect cows and sheep . In the center of the pit there was a stake with a pedestal to which a live bait was tied. The pit was completely covered with brushwood, straw and leaves. The wolf was attracted by the sounds of the bait, then broke in and could no longer free itself from the deep pit. In addition, pointed posts anchored in the ground injured or killed the fallen wolf.

The wolf pit is also known locally as the bear hole , although it was never used to trap bears .
