The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out from 1958 to 1959 was used to map it. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the island on September 23, 1960 after the US physicist Ernest Omar Wollan (1902-1984), who studied the structure of ice using neutron scattering .
