WoltLab Burning Board (now called WoltLab Suite Forum) (unofficial abbreviation: WBB or WSF ) is a proprietary forum software . It is being developed by the German company WoltLab in the PHP programming language .
history
Marcel Werk, today's managing director of WoltLab GmbH, developed forum software based on PHP and the MySQL database system in early 2001 . From May 16, 2001, Burning Board version 1.0 Beta 2 was offered for free download. On November 13, 2001, the Werk und Glander GbR was founded by Marcel Werk and Arian Glander, which was renamed WoltLab GmbH on August 18, 2003 . Arian Glander was the second managing director of WoltLab GmbH until December 31, 2009.
Burning Board 1
The market for forum software was manageable in mid-2001 and was dominated by fee-based products. Burning Board 1, published free of charge, therefore met with great interest. Especially the easy to modify source code made it interesting for "hobby developers". Since Burning Board 1, a fee-based “Branding Free” license has been offered to remove the visible copyright notice.
Version 1.2 appeared after the release of Burning Board 2 with minor improvements compared to version 1.1.
Burning Board 2
Version 2 was programmed from scratch. The main focus was on better usability. Many settings and changes can be made via the administration interface. This version already used the first approaches of object-oriented programming . Due to the development effort, WoltLab decided to offer this version for a fee, which was controversially received by the users.
Burning Board 2.1
Version 2.1, published on July 5, 2003, represented a milestone in the development of Burning Board 2. In addition to the changeover to the XHTML standard, an extended template system with control structures, a language system for the multilingualism of the forum software and an extended group system were added.
Burning Board 2.2, 2.3 and Lite 1
In addition to minor changes, the most important addition to version 2.2 was a Java-based WYSIWYG editor. In version 2.3, the file attachment system was expanded.
On August 5th, 2004 the free Burning Board Lite 1 appeared, a stripped down version of Burning Board 2, which replaced version 1.2 as the free basic version.
On January 21, 2005 WoltLab announced that the development phase of version 3 had started. The further development of Burning Board 2 and Burning Board Lite 1 was then discontinued and only bug fixes and security updates were submitted. Since July 9, 2010, support for the second generation Burning Board has been completely discontinued and is no longer available for download. Licenses acquired before this point in time are still valid and allow the operation of this version.
Burning Board 3 and Lite 2
In contrast to the previous versions, it was programmed completely object-oriented using PHP 5 and generates markup that corresponds to the current web standards XHTML 1.1 and CSS2 . The focus of development was on the use of semantic HTML and accessibility. The syntax of the template system was based on Smarty and offers significantly more extensive options than in version 2.
Architecturally, the software from version 3 is divided into a framework called WoltLab Community Framework (WCF), which serves as the basis for the development of end applications, and the end application Burning Board 3 based on it. The source texts of the core of the WCF are under the Open -Source license LGPL .
- Version 3.1 of the Burning Board, which was published on October 14th, 2009, is based on the WCF version 1.1 and brought many detailed improvements and a completely revised user profile, which can now be expanded with profile plugins such as guest book, gallery or blog.
- The free Burning Board Lite 2 released on March 6, 2008 is not a further development of Burning Board Lite 1, but is based on the WoltLab Community Framework and Burning Board 3. Burning Board Lite 2 is intended for smaller forum projects that do not have the full functionality of the Need the full version, as well as view it as a productive demo of Burning Board 3.
- On November 11th 2010 Woltlab released the Burning Board Lite 2.1. It is based on the Woltlab Community Framework 1.1 and offers functions that were previously only available in paid versions. These are the new user profile and the WYSIWYG editor from version 3.1, a revision of the skin, a member search function, extended settings for the file size and extended PN delivery.
According to WoltLab, no new functions should be built into Burning Board 3.1 and Lite 2.1. The focus is entirely on the development of the new Generation 4, the beta phase of which began in early 2013. After the publication of Burning Board 4 and WCF 2, the software, which is based on WCF 1.1, will be provided with bug fixes for another two years.
Burning Board 4
Burning Board 4.0 (code name: Dragon , English for "dragon") was released on December 12, 2013. A first beta version was released at the end of March. Among other things, the APIs were standardized, HTML5 was used and the stylesheet language Less and jQuery were used as JavaScript framework.
Burning Board 4.1 (code name: Meteor ) was released on March 1, 2015. One of the major changes is the replacement of the previously used CKEditor with Redactor 10. This is intended to ensure the solid and reliable writing and editing of contributions regardless of the device used.
Burning Board 4.0 and 4.1 are only suitable for small to medium-sized communities in the delivery state due to the limitations of the search function (MySQLs FULLTEXT). In larger communities with several 100,000 data records, according to Woltlab, the speed of the search decreases sharply and the relevance of the search results decreases. Starting with Burning Board version 4.1, this is remedied by an Elasticsearch integration, which Woltlab provides as a chargeable plug-in.
WoltLab Suite Forum 5.0 (Burning Board)
With the introduction of Woltlab Suite 3 (WSC3) on December 15, 2016 as the basic core CMS of WoltLab products, the nomenclature was also adapted and the Burning Board was named a Suite Forum . With the purchase of the new product lines (Forum 5.0, Blog 3.0, Calendar 3.0, Filebase 3.0, Gallery 3.0) you still get access to old versions.
Official extensions
For Burning Board 1 and 2
The development of the official extensions for version 1 and 2 has been stopped and the versions are no longer offered for purchase and download. All extensions available for Burning Board 2 were chargeable.
- With the NewsAddon , topics from Burning Board 1 and 2 could be displayed on external pages. This could be done either through an HTML or XML output.
- The WoltLab ChatServer (ChatAddon) was a Java- based chat extension for Burning Board from version 2.1. Despite the announcement of a final version, the last executable version was published with Beta 4.
- The Enzym-C Style was released on September 15, 2004 for Burning Board 2.2. A version for version 2.3 was released on January 11, 2005.
For Burning Board 3
- Tapatalk Support is a plugin for the Burning Board that offers support for the Tapatalk app for the forum . System requirements are at least version 1.1 of the Community Framework and Burning Board version 3.1.5 or higher.
- The chargeable Community Calendar Plugin offers the possibility of integrating appointment management into the forum. Up to version 2 of Burning Board, a simple calendar function was integrated directly into the forum software.
- The community blog , which is also available for a fee , offers the option of integrating blog software into the Burning Board user profile. The plugin requires at least version 1.1 of the Community Framework.
- With version 1.1 the Community Gallery , formerly the Personal User Gallery , is only offered for a fee. Like the blog, this requires version 1.1 of the Community Framework. Version 1.0 will be maintained for 2 years with bug fix updates.
- With the free Burning Board Search Engine Optimization package , WoltLab offers the possibility of optimizing forum software for search engines .
- With the also free plug-in Profile Guest Book , WoltLab Burning Board customers can add a guest book to the user profile of their forum.
- There are also 3 styles for a fee that can be purchased in the customer area: the Space style family and the Volcano X style family - available in several colors, and the Pure.Chrome style.
Unofficial extensions
A large community of volunteer developers has formed around Burning Board, who are constantly expanding the functionality and individuality of the forum software.
- Extensions for Burning Board 1 and 2 are known as hacks or add-ons. These extensions often have to be implemented in the forum software files by manually changing the source code, among other things. The term “style” is used for graphic redesign of the forum. Version 2 already allows the forum operator to incorporate several different styles into the software so that users can switch between them as desired.
- With the appearance of Burning Board 3 and WoltLab Community Framework 1, extensions are called plug-ins. These can be installed and uninstalled with a package manager without manual changes to the forum software . Graphic extensions are now referred to as "styles".
Support
The official support for the WoltLab Burning Board is handled via a ticket system in the customer area. This form of support is included in the standard scope of the license. However, it is only available to customers who have purchased the current version after December 12, 2013. This standard support does not apply to products and discounted upgrades from the previous version that are older. The affected customers are dependent on the voluntary help of other users in the support forum for support.
The standard support can be extended to a paid professional support. The two support packages differ in terms of scope and response time.
As of July 6, 2010, WoltLab GmbH used a public bug tracker that enabled software users to report program errors and make suggestions for improvement. With the change to the Woltlab Community Framework Version 2, the bug tracker was removed and forums are now used as bug trackers.
WoltLab Community Forum
Since the existence of Burning Board, the official support forum (abbreviation: WSF ) has been the most important point of contact for questions about the standard scope of the forum software. The forum works according to the "users help users" principle. In 2011 the former "Woltlab Support Forum" was renamed "Woltlab Community Forum" and now also deals with topics relating to the programming of plugins and the creation of styles that were previously outsourced to a separate forum.
WoltLab plugin store
WoltLab has been operating a plugin store since March 25, 2011, with the opening of which the previously existing WoltLab community, a plugin database with an attached forum for questions about plugins, was switched off and partially merged with the WoltLab Support Forum. Both free and paid extensions and styles can be offered in the plugin store.
Others
- The name Burning Board comes from Marcel Werks username "Burntime", from which Burning Board was derived.
- The frequently used abbreviation WBB is not officially used by WoltLab GmbH as it is already legally protected.
- The name WoltLab is an abbreviation of "Woltersdorf Laboratory", named after the first company headquarters in Woltersdorf (near Berlin) .
- Up to version 2.0 Beta 4 Burning Board had a call-home function.
