Wonga Shoal Lighthouse

The Wonga Shoal Lighthouse was located in the Gulf of Saint Vincent near Adelaide in South Australia , about three kilometers from the Semaphore jetty. The lighthouse rose 22 m above the water surface and was destroyed by a sailing ship.

construction

The lighthouse, erected in July 1901, and the entire structure, including the rooms for the lighthouse keepers, were made of steel. The foundation had been driven into the clay underground with several steel piles. The guards' rooms were about seven meters above the water.

accident

On November 17, 1912, the lighthouse of the three-master was Dimsdale rammed with his metal hull, although he fired was. As a result, he fell over and killed two lighthouse keepers. When Captain TB Richardson was informed of the accident early in the morning, he found that his ship was not seriously damaged and was about a quarter nautical mile north of the destroyed tower.

After reporting to the responsible Australian agency, they sent a diver to the scene of the accident who could only determine that the two lighthouse keepers had not drowned but had been killed by the structure. Both lighthouse keepers were married and had families. The operator of the lighthouse had forbidden the families to stay there, otherwise there would probably have been a loss of further human lives.

Review

Since the master thought that steering was not necessary, he was charged.

After the accident, a lighting system was set up on the Marino Rocks , which operated until the 1960s.

The name Wonga is said to come from the Aborigines and means sunset or west , a different opinion assumes that it is borrowed from the ship Wonga Wonga , which ran aground there.
