Wonnegau
The Wonnegau is a region in the south of Rheinhessen and covered the district of Worms until 1937.

Origin of name
The Romans called it in the 3rd / 4th Century wide-reaching administrative district around Worms after the tribe of the Vangionen Civitas Vangionum, who have lived here since the first century AD . The Worms called themselves vangions until the 16th century. The Wangengau for the area around Worms is derived from this name, which was then gradually renamed from the vernacular to the more understandable Wonnegau.
