Woodman Point Lighthouse

The Woodman Light , also Woodman Point Lighthouse , Gage Roads Lighthouse or Coogee Lighthouse , is a lighthouse in Western Australia .

It stands on the Woodman Point peninsula south of Fremantle , not directly on the coast, but on the hill in the peninsula. The Fremantle Port Authority is responsible for operating the lighthouse . The beacon, built in 1901 and first known as "Gage Roads Lighthouse", was intended to better secure the access of ocean-going ships to the port of Fremantle, the most important port in Western Australia, because the older lighthouse on Arthur Head was too weak for the increasing shipping traffic.

The tower was built in 1901 from local limestone by contractor WC Rose. It started operations on August 23, 1902. Two days later, the official inauguration took place in the presence of the Minister of Public Works Cornthwaite Rason , the Colonial Treasurer James Gardiner , the Mayor of Fremantle Lawrence Alexander and other personalities.

The lighthouse was equipped with a kerosene lamp from Messrs Chance Bros & Co. in Smethwick , England . The beacon lights up every 30 seconds for three seconds and has red, green and white sectors. During the Second World War , the tower was used by the Australian Army as a communication and observation post. When the lighthouse was switched to electrical operation in 1955, the last lighthouse keepers stopped working on July 19 of that year.
