World Association for Chinese Studies

The World Association for Chinese Studies eV (short: WACS, Chinese: 世界 汉学 研究 会; Pinyin: Shìjiè hànxué yánjiūhuì, German: World Association of Chinese Studies ) is a registered association founded in Bochum in 2016 for the purpose of promoting global exchange among sinologists and / or students. China scientists. Its head office was initially planned for Macau and is currently located in Witten. In 2020 it has around 200 members and around 2000 online members organized in chat forums.

Goal setting

In addition to its annual conferences, the association holds international academic forums, cooperates in international research projects, publishes research results and promotes the development of Sinology and Chinese studies worldwide according to the principles of evidence-based research ("respect for facts"), quality assurance, academic freedom and the Internationalization. The aim of the WACS is to expand cooperation within Chinese studies and with other disciplines, to improve their quality and to disseminate their results more widely in the world. The global Chinese studies should be improved and there should be an integration of the internal Chinese studies (Guoxue). The goals of the statutes include inclusivity, tolerance, innovation and multidisciplinary cross-border communication.

One of the most important events is the annual World Conference of Chinese Studies (previously in Witten, Vienna and Paris) with the conference languages ​​English and Chinese. It is visited by up to 100 scientists from up to 20 countries. What is special about these annual meetings is that scientists from the People's Republic of China exchange ideas with international colleagues from Asia, Australia, Africa, America and Europe. The conferences were reported in press releases (2017, 2018, 2019) and daily newspapers. There is cooperation with the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies, even in times of Corona. and with other national associations.

The highest body of the WACS is the annual general assembly. The WACS is legally represented by its President. This has been Martin Woesler since it was founded , last elected by the 2017 Annual General Meeting. Vice-Presidents are Richard Trappl and Thomas Weyrauch. Honorary Presidents are Harro von Senger (Switzerland), Shang Wei (USA), Edward L. Shaughnessy (France), Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer (Germany), Louise P. Edwards and Kam Louie (Australia), Marián Gálik (Slovakia) and Ye Jiaying (Canada). The board initially includes the presidents of the National Associations for Chinese Studies, namely Alena Pavlova (Russia), Yevhenii Hobova (Ukraine), Martin Woesler (Germany), Rommel Banlaoi (Philippines), as well as the individuals Xu Jianping, Karl-Heinz Pohl , Yu Hong, Zhou Wenye, You Tianwei. The board is elected every four years by the general assembly.
