Martin Woesler (born September 29, 1969 in Münster ) is a German sinologist and cultural scientist . After three professorships in Germany, the USA and Italy, he has been Professor of 'Literature and Communication in China' at the University of Witten / Herdecke since 2015 and Distinguished Professor at Hunan Normal University, China, since 2019. He is also a translator from Chinese, u. a. Co-translator of the Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber , and he publishes a bidirectional Chinese dictionary with Zhang Renli. He does research on the social credit system and media cultures in China.

Selected functions / honors

On June 1, 2017, Woesler was elected President of the German China Society . In 2019 he was a Senior Fellow of the DFG Research Training Group "Media Cultures of Computer Simulation" at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg during the summer semester and was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts , Salzburg, in November 2019 .

Furthermore, Woesler has been President of the World Association for Chinese Studies since 2016 .

Sinologist, translator from Chinese

Woesler has translated works by Cao Xueqin曹雪芹, lǔ Xun鲁迅, Zhou Zuoren周作人, Xǔ Dishan许地山, Yu Dafu郁达夫, Zhū Ziqing朱自清, Bing Xin冰心, Ba Jin巴金, Qian Zhongshu钱锺书, Wang Meng王蒙, Zhang Jié张洁, Liú Zàifù 刘再复, Jiǎ Píngwā 贾平凹, Hán Hán韩寒, Zhāng Huī 张 炜, Hán Shàogōng 韩少功, Shèng Kẹ̌yǐ 盛 可以, Yú Qiūyǔ 余秋雨. Many of the texts he translated became accessible in a Western language for the first time. With Rainer Schwarz , he translated the Chinese novel The Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone into German for the first time.

Woesler documented a criticism campaign against the liberal Chinese culture minister Wáng Měng and proved that this was only allegedly literary, but actually politically motivated ( Politische Literatur in China 1991-1992 , 1994). He moved the previously neglected genre of the Chinese essay as a modern means of expression for the emerging individualism in China into the focus of European and American sinology ( History of the Chinese Essay in Modernity and Present , 3 volumes, 1998). This literary short form, which was mainly distributed via newspapers, was an expression of an awakening critical public between the May 4th Movement and the early 1930s. Between the 1930s and around 1979, the essay was instrumentalized politically at the expense of literary quality. Woesler drew attention to the essayistic work of Zhōu Zuòrén, ostracized in China because of his independence and friendliness to Japan . This led to a reassessment of Zhou in American sinology.

A critical public has emerged again in China since the 1980s. Since the 1990s, Woesler has seen the Internet in the role of newspapers from the 1910s to the 1930s. Together with Chinese scientists, he documented in his books ( China's digital dream , 2002 et al.) That the Internet has a greater liberalizing effect in China than in more liberal countries.

Woesler holds international Chinese studies conferences about every year, for example in 2015 on The Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of Stone at the Folkwang University in Essen, and in 2017 and 2018 the annual conference of the World Association of Chinese Studies at the University of Witten / Herdecke. Since 2014, he has held various guest professorships / guest deans at Chinese universities.

Comparative cultural scientist

In the area of ​​cultural comparison, Woesler made a contribution to the further development of existing models through his contrastive examples from distant cultures, in particular from German and Chinese. In doing so, he expanded the theory of culture shock to include the term self-culture shock , which describes the state of shock that culture vultures can endure after returning from the foreign culture to their own culture. He related various traditional models and developed them further against the background of globalization, freedom of travel and the Internet. In 2006 he developed the model of cultural maps (culturemaps), in which all cultural phenomena can be located in a coordinate system and related to phenomena from other cultures. This model describes mixed cultures better than most traditional models. In the field of economics, Woesler used field studies by, among others, Hong / Pöyhönen / Kyläneiku 1998–2000 to investigate why China had become the world's factory since the 1980s. Woesler found the following characteristics of Chinese production and management culture as the successor to Japanese production culture to be internationally compatible and exemplary: informal networks, a broadly coordinated decision-making process, willingness to experiment, flexibility, adaptability and extreme competition.
