The Fierza Reservoir ( Albanian  Liqeni i Fierzës ) is the largest reservoir in Albania with an area of 72.6 square kilometers . Its 152 meter high dam near Fierza is the largest dam in the country. It dams the Drin beyond the confluence of the source rivers Weißer Drin and Schwarzer Drin . The reservoir extends in the valley of the White Drin to over the border to Kosovo . The water level is 295  m above sea level. A. Height. The lake holds around 2.7 billion cubic meters, which corresponds to about 25% of the annual flow.

The Steinschüttdamm was built from 1971 to 1978 and inaugurated in 1979. Chinese help planned and built in the beginning . It is a rubble dam that is 152 meters high above the valley floor and up to 167 meters above the foundation floor. The drop height is 118 meters. The connected hydropower plant has four Francis-type turbines with 125 MW each, a total of 500 MW. It is the second largest waterworks in Albania and generates about a third of the Albanian electricity demand. In 2003, the average annual production was given as 1328 GWh. Due to water scarcity , electricity production had to be drastically cut back in the years after the turn of the millennium. In January 2010, however, a lot of water had to be drained through the flood relief tunnels because there was a risk that the dam wall would be flooded and electricity production would collapse.

The Fierza Reservoir is up to 128 meters deep and part of a number of reservoirs along the Drins. The following Koman reservoir ( Liqeni i Komanit ) also serves as a traffic route in the remote mountain region. The third reservoir with the dam Vau-Deja , which forms the Vau-Deja reservoir with 24.7 square kilometers, is located furthest to the west. In North Macedonia , the Schwarze Drin is dammed just before the Albanian border to the Debarsko Ezero .

The impoundment of the Fierza Reservoir caused some political controversy in the 1980s. The Albanians dammed it up beyond the border without consultation with the Yugoslavs and flooded some border areas in Yugoslavia. On the Albanian side, the city of Kukës had to be relocated because it was flooded.

Until 2007, the Fierza hydropower plant had been renovated with Swiss help . The efficiency of the turbines and generators was increased. On March 29, 2007 the hydropower plant was put back into operation in the presence of the Albanian energy minister. A system was later created to monitor the stability of the dam.
