The International Life Saving Federation ( ILS ) is an international, humanitarian and politically neutral shell association of water rescue organizations .

history

The beginnings of international rescue services go back to the Premier congrès international de sauvetage in 1878 in Marseille. The ILS goes back to two associations, the Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique  (FIS) and World Life Saving  (WLS).

Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique (FIS)

The FIS was founded in France in 1910 as the Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage . Their seat was Paris . In the first few years there was a real boom, but this was interrupted by the First World War. After both world wars, the congresses were finally continued. In 1952, at a meeting in Paris, the name was changed to Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage et de Secourisme et de Sports Utilitaires . In 1963 there was another name change: Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage et de Sports Utilitaires . Finally, in 1985 the statutes were changed and the FIS was now called Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique .

World Life Saving (WLS)

World Life Saving (WLS) was founded in Cronulla / Australia in 1971 .

Merger

In February 1993 both associations merged to form the ILS. The official founding year is 1910. The ILS contract has been in force since 1994.
