The Wormworld Saga is a comic by the German illustrator Daniel Lieske (* 1977), which so far consists of 9 chapters. The comic is first published on the Internet , the first chapter went online on December 25, 2010. Since December 2011, the story has continued with up to three new chapters a year. The first three chapters were published in October 2012 at Tokyopop as a book; meanwhile (2018) chapters 4 to 9 have also been published as books in German and English.

Wormworld Saga had around 1.6 million readers by October 2012. According to the Frankfurter Rundschau , Daniel Lieske is "one of the most widely read and at the same time most unknown German comic strip artists".

action

The action is set in 1977 . For Jonas, a mediocre student, the summer holidays begin , which he and his father spend in the country with his grandmother. Jonas' mother is no longer alive, she was killed in an apartment fire. Since then, Jonas has been terrified of fire.

Jonas has a secret hiding place in his grandmother's house, to which he retreats to think up adventures and pursue his passion for drawing. When Jonas draws a butterfly , it comes loose from the paper and flies away. Jonas follows him and arrives at a mysterious picture. He crawls into the picture and finds himself in the "Wormworld", a world populated by giant insects . A young huntress named Raya saves Jonas from a "Draconia" and leads him to her village. Jonas slowly learns that he is a chosen one whose coming has already been prophesied and whose job it is to defeat Unurtha, the god of fire.

The plot is laid out over three cycles with a total of about 50–60 chapters.

origin

The starting point of the Wormworld saga is the picture The Journey Begins , which Lieske drew in 2006. It shows Jonas in front of the entrance portal to Wormworld. The picture was made as a contribution to the "CG Challenge" competition and took 2nd place.

Lieske worked as a graphic designer in the computer game industry, but gave up this job in order to be able to devote himself full-time to the Wormworld saga . The comic is offered free of charge on the Internet. The project is mainly financed through book sales and crowdfunding campaigns. Additional sources of income are paid additional content (up to August 2014 in an app ) and the sale of merchandise .

New chapters are initially available in German, English, French and Spanish. Translations into other languages ​​are made by fans. The first chapter is now available in 24 languages.

Book editions

After the chapters have been published on the homepage, two to three chapters are combined into one volume and published in German and English on Tokyopop . In addition to the actual story, the volumes also contain information on the technical implementation or character design.

The board game The Mysterious Forest , which was nominated as Children's Game of the Year in 2017 , is based on the Wormworld Saga and was illustrated by Lieske.

Lieske also developed a smartphone app in which the chapters and other information about the project could be viewed. The development of the app was stopped in 2014.

Lieske publishes several free and paid online tutorials that explain techniques for creating digital comics based on the Wormworld saga.
