Vsevolod Alfredowitsch Rauser ( Russian Всеволод Альфредович Раузер , scientific transliteration Vsevolod Al'fredovič Rauzer ; born October 16, 1908 ; † 1941 in Leningrad ) was one of the strongest Russian chess players in the 1930s .

In 1929 he was awarded the title of Master of Sports . In 1936 he finished second in the Leningrad Championship. He was also a participant in six Soviet state championships between 1927 and 1937, but could not achieve any top places there. Then he retired from active tournament play due to illness. He died during the Leningrad blockade .

His best historical rating was 2627, which put him at number 24 in the world rankings in 1937.

Rauser found a lot of new ideas in the openings . Variants in the Spanish and Sicilian openings are named after him. Rauser introduced the moves 6. Bg5 in the classic Sicilian ( Richter-Rauser variant ) and the formation Be3 and f3 in the dragon variant (Sicilian) into tournament practice.

The saying “1. e4 starts and wins ”.
