The Wupperbrücke Pestalozzistraße near Gutenbergplatz is a bridge over the Wupper for inner-city traffic in Wuppertal - Elberfeld . As one of the oldest steel truss bridges (built in 1876) in the city, it has been a listed building since April 14, 2005.
Before it was renamed in 1935, Pestalozzistraße was called Schillerstraße, so that the bridge was previously known as the Schiller Bridge . After the expansion in 1877/79, the street established an important development from the Arrenberg district to Friedrich-Ebert-Straße (then under the name Königsstraße ) and thus a connection between the workers' residential area Arrenberg and the site of the up-and-coming industrial company Friedr. Bayer et comp. (today Bayer AG ). The operation of the cattle yard on the Arrenberg was also better connected to the western parts of the city.
The span of the bridge is 34.28 m and is provided with semi-parabolic top chords above the 5.8 m wide carriageway. The sidewalks to the right and left are each 1.3 m wide. The structure does not run across the river at a right angle, but rather slightly inclined at 84 °.
In the past, the bridge was renovated several times; after the renovations in 1949 and 1965, considerable corrosion damage was found in 2002 during a regular bridge inspection. The bridge was then renovated within ten months from mid-2005, whereby it had to be completely closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The cost of the renovation measures was estimated at 385,000 euros.
