The Wupperfelder Kantorei was a German mixed church choir .

history

The beginnings of the choir go back to the cantor choir of the Old Church in Wupperfeld , who was founded in 1866 by Pastor Emil Frommel and was one of the first mixed church choirs in German-speaking countries. After Munich, Dresden, Aachen and Vienna, Friedrich Geß founded a Bach club in Wupperfeld in 1914 . The choir gained supraregional reputation through the engagement of Gottfried Grote , who later also directed the Berlin State and Cathedral Choir . In addition to the focus on historical performances from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, contemporary works by Hindemith and Kaminski were also performed. The highlights were world premieres by Hugo Distler and Ernst Pepping . The first radio recordings were made in 1932. Grote's successor was Fritz Bremer, who maintained the "avant-garde programs" of contemporary composers such as Distler and Pepping. There was also an intensive collaboration with the church music institute in Leipzig and the later Thomaskantor Kurt Thomas . Fritz Bremer fell in the war in 1941, and was succeeded by Hans Hulverscheidt from Cologne.

Winfried Pesch , who directed it from 1952 to 1992, took over the rebuilding of the choir . Pesch integrated the choir, which called itself Wupperfelder Kantorei from 1981 , into the Wupperfeld Abendmusiken , of which he was the founder and artistic director. The entire stylistic and formal palette of occidental music history from Gregorian chant to contemporary composers was offered, including numerous world premieres and German premieres. Works by Mendelssohn and Vivaldi were recorded on sound carriers. In the mid-1980s the choir had almost 100 members from all over North Rhine-Westphalia. There was close cooperation with the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra , the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and neighboring choirs.

In 1992 Carsten Zündorf took over the management. In addition to the choir, he founded the Wupperfeld Chamber Choir, which was later called Capella Coristi . The number of choir members in the Wupperfelder Kantorei decreased. Due to austerity measures by the church district of Wuppertal, the A-cantor position in neighboring Unterbarmen was canceled. In 2001 the Wupperfelder Kantorei merged with the Unterbarmen Cantorei to form the Bergische Kantorei . A 135 year old tradition was abandoned. Carsten Zündorf was fired for operational reasons in 2005 and with him the A position in Wupperfeld. The newly formed , parish -independent Bergische Kantorei is self-financing, as there is no support from the Wuppertal church district. Matthias Lotzmann took over the direction of this choir. KMD Winfried Pesch died in June 2006.
