The Wuppertal Greyhounds are an American football club from Wuppertal in the Bergisches Land in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Wuppertal Greyhounds were founded on November 27, 1980 and are Wuppertal's only American football team. They were among the first teams founded in Germany.

The team played its first season in 1981 and had several thousand spectators per game in the 1980s. From 1982 to 1986 they played in the 2nd Bundesliga (North). In 2006 the men's team disbanded and joined the Remscheid Amboss . Due to internal discrepancies, a new Wuppertal men's team was set up in 2011, which competed in the North Rhine-Westphalia regional league in 2012.

In 2016 he was promoted to the association league (5th league in North Rhine-Westphalia). In 2017, the promotion to the upper league (4th division NRW) in the home game against the Recklinghausen Chargers (8:10) was missed.

In 2018, the Wuppertal Greyhounds hosted the preseason tournament (Wupperbowl) for the sixth time since 2012 , which they won in front of 1,400 spectators. Participants were the Dortmund Giants , Cologne Crocodiles II and the Krefeld Ravens . In 2018 they were promoted to the Oberliga NRW, and in 2019 they reached third place in the Oberliga NRW. Albert Thüssing has been the new head coach since November 2019. He succeeded Bernd Janzen, who moved to the second division Solingen Paladins. In addition, Krishna Musnadi joined the greyhounds as Defense Coordinator, Franz Adebahr (DB), Ralf Pönitsch (Qb), Marc Bohmfalk (OL), but above all founding member Frank Stratenschulte (DL) as further trainers.

The Wupperbowl should also be held in 2020. The meeting of local footballers on the Cologne Falcons Prospects, Schiefbahn Riders and the Neuss Legions, scheduled for March 28, was canceled due to the corona pandemic.

Teams

In addition to the men's team, there is an U13, U16 and U19 team. There is also a women's team called Greyhound Ladies .
