Wyke Castle

Wyke Castle is the folly of a castle in the village of Wyke Regis near Weymouth in the English county of Dorset . The 19th century building sits up on Pirates Lane near Westhill Road, and English Heritage has listed it as a Grade II Historic Building since 1974.

history

Wyke Castle was built by the French exile Andrew Chadwick Fenoulhet (1820–1862) from Portland . The construction of the castle was inspired by the Martello towers .

In the early 1920s, ornithologist Edmund Selous and his wife Fanny Margaret Maxwell lived in the castle. Selous was a naturalist, writer, and traveler. The round tower with a glass roof was once decorated with its collection of butterflies. While living in the castle, Fanny Margaret Maxwell founded the local branch of the Women's Institute in 1923 and became its first president.

A 28-tonne tugboat built in Japan , used for hauling along the coast and in Portland Harbor, was named after the castle in 2004.

Construction of the castle

The Portland stone castle with slate and lead roofs overlooks The Fleet , Chesil Beach , Portland Harbor and Weymouth. It consists of a crenellated round tower with a square tower, short wings and a vaulted cellar in which there is a freshwater fountain called "The Dungeon".

The castle is a V-shaped ensemble consisting of three buildings connected by lower parts of the building with sloping roofs. The low round tower at the top of the V has a parapet decorated with reliefs, which is supported by vaulted modillions. Inside the parapet, in the northeast part of the tower, there is a small chimney. The tower originally had two narrow windows, and a three-winged window was added at the end of the 19th century. The tower with a square floor plan on the south side has a simple parapet wall and a small arched window. These two buildings are connected by a low section with a sloping roof and a small, single-leaf window. To the southwest of the round tower is a larger, rectangular building with two floors. Its windows are small and single-leaf and the door is set back into the wall. The sloping roof is surrounded by a parapet. The connecting wing is also a low building with a sloping roof with a square vestibule. The windows are a mixture of single-leaf and triple-leaf designs.
