XMail is a free POP3 / ESMTP internet and intranet e-mail server for Unix , Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems. XMail was developed under a GNU license until around 2010 .

functionality

Several filter interfaces made XMail a flexible tool. Filters could be implemented in any programming language that can process command line arguments and return error codes. In addition, there was an interface in order to be able to remotely maintain almost all server functions.

distribution

In an analysis by Falco Timme in March and April 2004, the market penetration of various mail servers was measured on the basis of a scan of then existing mail servers in Europe and the United States. In this analysis, XMail landed in 11th place with a market penetration of 0.23% (March) and 0.10% (April) behind ESMTP , Sendmail , IMail , Exim , Postfix , MailEnable , Merak , Mailer-Daemon , MERCUR and CommuniGate Pro , but z. B. before Lotus Domino or Microsoft Exchange

An analysis of the market penetration of Security Space in May 2015 of around 2.3 million servers listed XMail in 11th place among 33 installed mail servers with a market share of 0.14% after a response from over a million servers (response rate).
