xv is a shareware program developed by John Bradley for the display and manipulation of digital images that runs under X11 on most Unix-like operating systems.

The program became very popular in the early 1990s and was for a time the main image viewer on Unix systems. Due to copyright problems, the last official version 3.10a was published in December 1994. Bradley was unable to negotiate a license for the LZW algorithm , which is necessary to decode the GIF image format , which was widespread at the time .

However, Bradley collected up to at least 2000 extensions from third parties in order to extend the functionality of xv in this way. One of the most important improvements is the support of the PNG image format . The enhancements were only released in the form of patches that are to be applied sequentially to the original source code from 1994. Additional extensions are still (2007) being created and maintained by volunteers.

xv is called either from the command line with a variety of different possible arguments or through a graphical interface. The program differs from most other image viewers and editors in that it requires little computer resources and has an efficient user interface. This is based on the fact that many operations are combined within individual dialogs. Instead of making many individual changes, numerous parameters can be set within the powerful dialogues, which act instantaneously on the displayed image. These include: making cutouts, changing colors or using filters. All changes to the dialogs can be undone en bloc. However, many common tools such as manipulating individual pixels or drawing lines are not implemented.

xv is still present in recent editions of Slackware and openSUSE , but is no longer included in most distributions of Linux. John Bradley is also the author of the xcalc program available in the most popular Linux distributions .
