Xabregas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xabregas is a neighborhood in the municipality of Beato in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .

The neighborhood is on the right bank of the Tagus River on the former trade route to the north. The origin of the place name is not clear. In documents from the Middle Ages, the place appears as Exevregas , Exabregas , Eyxebregas or Enxobregas . Because of the location on the river, the name could be derived from the Arabic word "xabaka" (= trawl net). The numerous finds from Roman times also suggest a Roman settlement in Axabrica .

In 1509 the former Queen Dona Leonor founded a Franciscan monastery . Today the Teatro Íberico is housed in the building. The Museu Nacional do Azulejo is also located there.

The Viaduto de Xabregas was built in the 1850s .
