Xia Changshi

Xia Changshi ( 夏昌世 , Xià Chāngshì ; * 1903 in Guangdong , Chinese Empire ; † December 4, 1996 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Chinese architect. He designed numerous large buildings, especially universities and hospitals. His concern was to combine the local Chinese architecture with modern European architecture. He was thus the founder of Lingnan architecture . The basis for this was his training at the TH Karlsruhe and at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen .

Xia Changshi was born in May 1903 in Guangdong into an artisan family of overseas Chinese. At a young age he went to Germany to study.

  • In 1928 he finished his engineering studies at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and obtained the qualification as an engineer (university degree).
  • In 1932 he received his doctorate at the Art History Institute of the Charles University in Tübingen.
  • After his return to China, he worked as an engineer in the Ministry of Railways and Transport from 1932 to 1939.
  • 1940–1941 professor at Tongji University
  • 1942–1945 professor at the Central University and at Chongqing University.
  • 1946–1952 professor at Zhongshan University (more often: Sun Yat-sen University (Guangdong) ).
  • 1952 Professor at the Technical University of South China ( 华南 工学院 , Huánán gōngxuéyuàn ), in Guangzhou. Official English name: South China University of Technology.

Xia Changshi was not a member of the CCP. The construction contracts were therefore withdrawn from him. He then turned to research into garden design. He was a co-founder of the Guangdong Society of Gardening. In 1966, during the Cultural Revolution, he was taken to a labor camp for "re-education" and in November 1968 he was sent to prison on charges of espionage, as was his wife, Ottilie Hsia-Bretschger. In 1972 both were released in connection with preparations for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the PRC and the Federal Republic of Germany. Xia Changshi was considered a German citizen.

  • 1973 in August he moved to Freiburg in Germany
  • He was also director of the Board of Directors Second and Third Conference of the Chinese Study Society for Engineering ( 中国 建筑 学会 , Zhōngguó jiànzhù xuéhuì ) and also chairman of the executive branch of the Guangdong Study Society for Horticulture ( 广东 园林 学会 , Guǎngdōng yuánlínxuéhuì ) a nonprofit organization of the Horticultural engaged technicians and art workers based in Guangzhou.
  • In 1982 he returned to China and lived in Hong Kong as a Chinese overseas.

Before and after that he came to Guangzhou to advise on the construction of the Chinese Abroad Hospital at Jinan University ( 暨南 大学 , Jìnán dàxué ) and to take part in the engineering work.

Xia Changshi died of an illness on December 4, 1996 in Freiburg, Germany.

Award
